The Gingerman Group have long been the bedrock of the city’s hospitality scene, says Nick Mosley.
Founded by husband and wife team Ben and Pamela McKellar, the group now consists of four venues. The original Gingerman Restaurant in Norfolk Square, the Ginger Fox in Albourne, the Ginger Dog pub in Kemp Town and the Ginger Pig pub in Hove.
Its the latter venue that is stealing the headlines this summer, with the opening of the Ginger Rooms above the Pig. First mooted well over a decade ago, after a year in the making the rooms discreetly opened for bookings a couple of weeks ago.
Designed by Brighton based Landivar Architects with no-doubt considerable creative meddling from Pamela, rooms are simple yet luxurious. A contemporary colour palette of dark grey-green, sparkling white and dark oak is finessed with tarnished gold highlights, retro lamps, statement piece cushions and armchairs, and bespoke artworks. The bathrooms are designed to look and feel spacious and uncomplicated with double size walk in showers, mirrors and geometric tiling. Some of the feature rooms have deep free-standing baths that are simply begging for you to soak in them.
To ease your stay, there’s an abundance of Cowshed bath products, a generous mini-bar with handmade cocktails prepared by Rob in the bar downstairs, and your own espresso machine. A nice touch is the pre-packed beach bag with towels and mat so you can pop for an early morning swim, should you feel that way inclined.
So how was the sleep? Heavy curtains reassuringly kept the light and any road noise away, whilst the Hypnos mattress and Soak & Sleep linens and duvet provided a cosy cocoon, so much so that I slept for 10 hours which is a bit of a record for me.
I caught up with Marianna, former manager of the Ginger Dog and now leading the team for the Ginger Rooms, to get a taste of the ethos of the property. “With only 11 rooms our focus is very much about the personal experience. The rooms have everything a guest could need for their comfort. We want everyone to feel relaxed and at ease when they stay with us.”
With the opening of the Ginger Rooms, the Pig is now offering a daily breakfast menu from 8am until 11.30am every day with walk-ins welcome. Breakfast isn’t included in the room rate but is eminently affordable with a croissants and bacon rolls for a few quid working up to a full English is £11. Or you can go throw caution to the wind and dine on fresh oysters washed down with a ‘Corpse Reviver’ gin… this is breakfast in Brighton after all.
