Plotting Parlour presents the Cabinet of Wonders

Nick Mosley catches up with cocktail supremo Jake Goldstein, manager of The Plotting Parlour.

Stumbling upon The Plotting Parlour, back in October 2014, was a very fortunate occurrence as it rapidly became my favourite cocktail bar in the city. Although its now well-and-truly on the map, it still has an air of secret drinking den about it, no doubt contributed to by it being tucked away on grubby little Stein Street by Aquarium roundabout.

Not ones to rest on their laurels, the business has continued to develop with the addition of two further upstairs rooms, and a small kitchen and prep area. They’ve also recently launched their Cocktail Cabinet.

“We realised that there wasn’t actually a specialist spirit retailer in the city”, says Jake. “As one of the city’s leading cocktail destinations we thought we could help fill that gap by offering off-sales”.

The Cabinet is located at the entrance to The Plotting Parlour and for anyone interested in the world of premium spirits its an absolute marvel. Packed with limited edition and out-of-circulation bottles, its a cornucopia of the weird and wonderful.

Jake is particularly proud of their Facundo range, named after Don Facundo Bacardí Massó who founded the Bacardi rum brand in Cuba back in 1862.

“The Facundo Rum Collection is some of the best rum in the world”, says Jake. “It’s basically rums drawn from the family’s private reserves so its something really special. We’re the only place in the south east outside of London where you can buy these”.

Upstairs has seen a recent renovation but Jake and the team weren’t happy that they were utilising the space well so they are currently undergoing a re-jig.

“We’ll be having a private room for tastings and small parties that people can hire on an hourly basis”, says Jake. “And we’ve a number of pop-up supper club events coming up including Dan Kenny from The Set on Thursday 9 November”.

As the team are true mixologists, they can’t stop playing with different ideas and combinations, and thinking up increasingly witty drink names. You’ll currently find on the menu the likes of ‘Mange tout Rodney, Mange tout’ – a short daiquiri style cocktail –, and ‘Comin’ Matcha’ – a tequila and matcha green tea combination. Or they’ll be more than happy to make you your favourite classic.
