Brighton will see the launch of a new major farmers market this Saturday 20 April. The market will be conveniently located on a disused bus lane alongside the war memorial on Old Steine, and run from 10am – 4pm every third Saturday of each month.
The market is being managed by the team behind the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival, and is the culmination of two years of work with local councillor Geoffrey Bowden and council officers to make local food accessible to residents.
“Getting this central site has been essential to create a commercially viable farmers market in the heart of the city”, said festival director Nick Mosley.
“Our aim is to make local food both accessible and affordable to residents, whilst also making economic sense for small local businesses to participate. Starting a new initiative like this will require time and commitment but we believe the site is perfect in terms of visibility and footfall, and will prove to be a successful and sustainable food market for the city”.
The opening market will feature around 20 local growers and producers including fish, fruit and vegetables, pies and pastries, chocolate and cakes, bread, cheese, jams and chutneys. With 34 possible pitches at the site, over the coming months more local producers and farmers will be invited to join and sell quality Sussex food directly to consumers. Sussex-based growers and producers can register their interest via the festival website here.
The market is also supporting the festival’s charitable partners with pitches at events, and over the summer months there will be additional hands-on activities around planting, food preparation and children’s workshops.
The event will complement the weekly farmers market at Churchill Square.
