The popular Sussex and the World Weekend as part of the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival hit Hove Lawns this August Bank Holiday weekend, showcasing amazing produce and dishes from home and afar. The event was free to attend with heaps of entertainment for young and old, with the sun making a consistent performance for all to enjoy.
Local food charity FareShare Sussex joined in the action in the Kid’s Festival tent, providing face-painting, mask-decorating and a lucky dip to raise awareness and funds for the project.
FareShare redistribute surplus food that would otherwise be wasted to over 90 local community groups that support vulnerable people, and they rely on donations from the public to keep up their work. Last weekend’s event raised a brilliant £370, which will enable the charity to deliver enough food for 1850 meals and prevent over 770kg of food from being needlessly thrown away.
Marion Sheehan, Project Manager at FareShare Sussex said “The partnership with the Brighton & Hove Food Festival is so valuable to FareShare’s success, promoting our message to the city’s food-lovers, highlighting the need to prevent perfectly good food from going to waste and ensure it gets to those who often have to go without.”
Over several years, the partnership with Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival has inspired a number of fundraising events as well as generating new relationships between with local restaurants and food businesses. In May this year the Curry Leaf Café raised over £4000 by hosting a delicious Indian Banquet.
Not only did the Curry Leaf Café put on this incredible event they have continued their support by including a permanent £1 donation on every £7.50 cocktail, which goes directly to FareShare Sussex.
Last year, chef/owner Michael Bremner and the rest of the team behind the award-winning64 Degrees elevated surplus food to new heights, creating a stunning wine-matched menu based around FareShare’s surplus food, including the unusual cornflake waffle dessert!
FareShare Sussex are looking for local businesses that are interested in getting involved with their project. If you are inspired to support FareShare Sussex, visit faresharesussex.org.uk for more information.
