Food charity partnership success

On our hottest bank holiday weekend on record, the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival took to Hove Lawns this August to host the successful 3-day event, Sussex and the World Weekend.

The event featured a huge range of delectable delights from small food businesses and producers, with entertainment for all the family.

One of the festival’s chosen charities, FareShare Sussex brought their delivery van down to the Lawns to showcase their work tackling hunger and fighting food poverty in across the county.

FareShare redistribute surplus food that would otherwise be wasted to nearly 100 local community groups that support vulnerable people, and they rely on donations from the public to keep up their work. Last weekend’s event raised over £200, which will enable the charity to deliver enough food for 1000 meals and prevent over 420kg of food from needlessly being wasted.

In addition to promoting their work to the public, FareShare Sussex took to the Live Food stage with one of the beneficiaries of their service, St Anne’s Day Centre for homeless and isolated people. Shelley and Mary from the centre cooked up a crowd-pleasing soup to demonstrate how the food FareShare provides helps the community’s most vulnerable people.

Beth Parry, Fundraising Manager at FareShare Sussex said “We are thrilled to be a charity partner of the festival; it has enabled us to share our message to hundreds of people that all have a passion for food and are shocked by the amount of people going hungry in their community.”

Over several years, the partnership with Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival has inspired a number of fundraising events as well as generating new relationships between with local restaurants and food businesses. In May, beloved Brighton restaurants La Choza and Curry Leaf Cafe raised over £3000 in an ‘India vs Mexico’ banquet.

FareShare Sussex are looking for local businesses that are interested in getting involved with their project. If you are inspired to support FareShare Sussex, visit for more information.
